About VGLI
  • Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI) is a program that allows you to continue life insurance coverage after you separate from service.
  • VGLI was established in 1974 as part of the Veterans' Insurance Act of 1974.
  • VGLI has been administered by The Prudential Insurance Company of America for the Department of Veterans Affairs since the VGLI program began.
  • You are eligible to apply for VGLI if:
  • You had Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) and were released from active duty or active duty for training under a call or order to duty that does not specify a period of less than 31 days.
  • You were a member of the Ready Reserves/National Guard and insured under SGLI and you are separated, retired, or released from assignment.
  • You are an individual who was assigned to the IRR of a branch of service or to the Inactive National Guard (ING). This includes members of the United States Public Health Service Inactive Reserve Corps (IRC).
  • You are a member who had part-time SGLI and who, while performing duty, suffered an injury or disability that rendered you uninsurable at standard premium rates. This includes travel directly to and from duty.
  • You must apply for VGLI within 1 year and 120 days from your date of separation. After that date, you are no longer eligible for VGLI.
  • If you apply within 240 days of your date of separation no medical questions are asked. After 240 days, proof of good health is required to obtain VGLI.
  • Renewable Coverage - Once obtained, you can retain your VGLI coverage regardless of changes to your health or job status as long as premiums are paid.
  • No medical questions - Apply within 240 days of your date of separation and no medical questions are asked. After 240 days, proof of good health is required to obtain VGLI.
  • No exclusions - VGLI does not exclude Veterans for reasons related to mental health, PTSD, or TBI. Plus, VGLI does not exclude applicants based on their occupation or recreational activities.
  • Standard premium rates - VGLI premium rates are based on age and coverage amount only. Rates are the same regardless of gender or smoker status.
  • Five-year coverage increase option - You can increase your VGLI coverage by $25,000 every five years up to $500,000, until age 60.
